NEW CANADIAN STUDY PERMIT REQUIREMENTS

NEW CHANGES TO STUDY PERMIT

Commencing from January 22, 2024, most international students would need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL from either the province or territory where they intend to study. This is to avoid a rejection of your application.

WHO CAN APPLY FOR A STUDY PERMIT?

  • You must be enrolled in one of the Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) approved by Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
  • Must be financial capable of paying for their tuition fees, his living expenses
  • (and those of family members) and capable of paying for return a flight
  • Must be law abiding and obtain a police certificate
  • Must be medically healthy a obtain a medical exam.

STUDENTS’ RESPONSIBILITIES

While studying, international students are obligated to:

  • Work toward completing their education
  • Obeying the work permit conditions
  • Inform IRCC if you change your school
  • If you are no longer meeting study requirements, stop studying
  • When your study permit expires, leave Canada

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

  • Acceptance letter
  • If their program of study is either a master’s or doctoral degree, a PAL is required
  • Identity document
  • Financial capability proof
  • Biometrics
  • Other documentation may also be required

WHERE CAN YOU GO TO APPLY?

Prospective students should apply online except they can prove that they either have a

disability, are stateless or are refugees. The approximate processing time is around 8

weeks. However, the processing time may depend on the country you are applying from.

THE COMPLETENESS CHECK

The completeness check is the process where the processing officer ascertains whether all the required documents have been included in the study permit application. In some cases, incomplete applications can be rejected. If the application is approved, the student will be issued a study permit and a letter of introduction.

YOUR DUTY BEFORE YOU COME TO CANADA

  • Before leaving your country of residence, read the pre-departure guide and information about life as a student in Canada.
  • It’s also important to read the Canadian Border Service Agency’s information for international students.
  • Demonstrate, at the port of entry, your willingness to return to your home country or country of origin after your graduation.

AFTER YOUR STUDIES

You may qualify for a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) after your studies. Below are IRCC’s updated minimum requirements for PGWP:

  • You must have completed a program of study at a DLI
  • You maintained full-time status in all semesters of your program
  • You must apply for PGWP within 180 days of your graduation
  • Your study permit was valid at some point during the 180 days of your graduation
  • You are not subject to one of the exceptions to eligibility
