Founded in 1980 and re-envisioned in 2017, the firm has evolved into a structured, growth-oriented legal practice focused on delivering consistent, high-quality legal services.

Today, the firm operates as a multi-office practice with a growing presence beyond Calgary, reflecting both its expansion and its commitment to serving clients across jurisdictions. With a multidisciplinary team capable of delivering legal services in over 32 languages, the firm brings both depth of expertise and global perspective to its work.

The firm’s transformation began in 2017, when Dr. Charles Osuji acquired what was then a small, established practice after joining the firm as an articling student approximately 3 years prior.

With a clear vision and disciplined execution, the firm has since grown into a multi-office operation, expanding its team, capabilities, and geographic reach while maintaining a strong foundation in client service. Osuji & Smith operates from two locations in Calgary and maintains a presence in Toronto, Vancouver and Dubai.

This growth has been deliberate—focused not only on scale, but on building systems, developing people, and positioning the firm to handle increasingly complex and high-value legal matters.

As part of this evolution, the firm has become one of Canada’s largest Black-owned law firms, reflecting both its scale and its broader contribution to the profession.

Leadership

Dr. Charles Osuji is the Founder, CEO, and Managing Counsel of Osuji & Smith Lawyers.

Since acquiring the firm in 2017, he has led its transformation into a modern, multi-office legal practice focused on building an institution defined by discipline, performance, and long-term vision.

In addition to his legal work, Dr. Osuji is a Chartered Director (C.Dir.) and has received numerous recognitions for his contributions to the legal profession. For several years, our team has been voted among the best-rated Employment, Business, Civil Litigation, Divorce, and Estate Planning lawyers in Calgary across multiple independent platforms.

Dr. Osuji continues to refine his approach through executive education at Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School, focusing on organizational leadership, corporate strategy, and the management of complex institutions—disciplines that directly inform how he advises clients on high-stake decisions.
