Professional Biography

Catherine Eseonu (“Kate”) is a private practitioner specializing in the areas of Immigration Law, Family Law & Divorce, Real Estate, and Wills & Estate Planning. She provides contractual immigration services to Osuji & Smith Lawyers and serves as a Private Panel Family Lawyer with the Legal Services Board of Nunavut.

Kate’s professional journey reflects a unique combination of legal experience, frontline social services work, conflict resolution training, and cross-cultural advocacy developed across both Nigeria and Canada. Clients value her practical guidance, calm approach, and deep understanding of the personal and legal complexities families and individuals often face during major life transitions.

Kate began her academic journey with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Linguistics from Abia State University in 1993. She later obtained her LL.B. from Rivers State University of Science and Technology in 2006 before completing her bar admission program at the Nigerian Law School, Enugu Campus. She was called to the Nigerian Bar on May 8, 2008.

Following her call to the Bar, Kate began practicing as a Private Practitioner in Nigeria, where she represented clients in Family Law, Immigration Law, Corporate Law, Adoption Services, and Real Estate matters. Early in her career, she provided contractual legal services to Spring Bank Plc (Lagos Branch), handling criminal matters and mortgage perfection services. Through this work, she developed strong practical knowledge in finance, real estate, accounting, contracts, and regulatory processes while continuing to build her legal practice and entrepreneurial experience.

Kate also supported numerous Nigerians in immigrating to Canada, Australia, and the United States through her immigration work in Nigeria. Through active participation and leadership within her law firm and professional community, she has maintained her legal standing with the Nigerian Bar Association while continuing to deepen her understanding of both Nigerian and Canadian legal systems.

In 2009, Kate immigrated to Canada with her husband and six children. During her transition into the Canadian legal system, she worked on the front lines of child protection and social services, where she gained firsthand experience with Canadian court systems, family law matters, and the realities many families face during vulnerable periods of their lives. That experience continues to shape her compassionate and people-focused approach to legal practice today.

Kate challenged the Federation of Law Societies of Canada NCA accreditation process in 2013 before completing a 12-month articling placement in Edmonton, Alberta.

Committed to strengthening her conflict resolution and advocacy skills, Kate later obtained a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Conflict Analysis and Management from Royal Roads University in 2021. Following graduation, she joined the Legal Services Board of Nunavut before being called to the Nunavut Bar in 2022. She was also admitted to the Law Society of Alberta in 2022, expanding her legal practice across three jurisdictions.

From frontline work with families and youth involved in the justice system to serving multicultural communities across Canada, Kate has developed a strong reputation for providing culturally sensitive, practical, and compassionate legal services. She is also passionate about mentorship and supporting individuals navigating unfamiliar legal and social systems.

Apart from her love for the law profession, Kate is passionate about human justice and fair treatment for all. When she is not in her wig and her gown, Kate spends her free time providing humanitarian services through volunteering with youth and family programs in both Canada and Nigeria.
