Professional Biography

Chukwuemeka Ahunanya Ezeogu (“Lyon”) is a Senior Associate at Osuji & Smith Lawyers with an extensive background in Litigation, Regulatory Law, Public Policy, and Cross-Border Legal strategy. With legal and institutional experience spanning both Nigeria and Canada, Lyon brings a commercially minded and highly analytical approach to complex legal matters involving businesses, professionals, and individuals operating in increasingly regulated and fast-moving environments.

His practice includes Commercial Disputes, Labour and Employment matters, Regulatory and Legislative Policy, Immigration, Energy and Infrastructure Law, as well as complex Family Litigation involving estates and mobility issues. Known for combining legal precision with strategic problem-solving, Lyon regularly advises clients navigating sophisticated legal, operational, and compliance-related challenges where thoughtful advocacy, risk management, and long-term strategy are essential.

Prior to relocating to Canada, Lyon practiced extensively in Nigeria, where he also served as a university law lecturer. He obtained his LL.M. in Commercial and Industrial Law and built a diverse legal practice. During this time, he represented clients in several high-profile matters before Nigerian courts and tribunals, prosecuted appeals before the Immigration Court in England, closed complex business transactions, perfected securities for financial institutions, and served as External Solicitor to corporate institutions in Nigeria.

Lyon developed a strong reputation in legal education, mediation, and advocacy. As a law lecturer, he taught business law, legal methods, interviewing and counselling, while also coordinating law clinic programs focused on advocacy, legal outreach, street law initiatives, and international client counselling competitions. He additionally represented the law faculty at the University Senate’s Examination Reconciliation Council and became known for his commitment to legal education and professional mentorship.

Lyon is also a certified Mediator with the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) and was among the first group of trained African Law Clinicians under the Open Society Justice Initiative (OSJI) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He previously served as an Executive Member of the Nigerian Bar Association, Aba Branch, and was a former member of its Law Reform and Human Rights Committees. Lyon was also appointed as a Notary Public by the Chief Justice of the Federation of Nigeria and continues to maintain good standing with the Nigerian Bar Association.

Since immigrating to Canada, Lyon has continued to expand his legal and policy expertise through advanced education and institutional experience. He completed the Government of Canada’s Internationally Trained Lawyers Program (ITLP) at the University of Toronto, the Law Practice Program (LPP) through Toronto Metropolitan University, and certified negotiation training through the University of Windsor Faculty of Law. He also obtained a second master’s degree in Energy and Infrastructure Law from Osgoode Hall Law School, where he volunteered as a mentor to new law students.

Lyon’s Canadian experience includes legal and policy work with the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General and the Ontario Ministry of Infrastructure, where he contributed to significant legal and policy initiatives involving NAFTA-related litigation, infrastructure matters, and legislative development. He also contributed to the development of Ontario’s legal framework relating to forfeited corporate property legislation. In addition, Lyon worked on legal projects involving provincial and federal laws within the Office of the General Counsel at Loblaw Companies Limited and completed contract work with Deloitte Canada.

Since joining Osuji & Smith Lawyers, Lyon has continued to represent clients in complex and high-impact legal matters while also serving as the firm’s Director of Talent and Professional Development and Editor-in-Chief of OSL Blogs & Articles. His work reflects a strong commitment to leadership, mentorship, professional excellence, and the continued development of modern legal practice.

Outside of his legal practice, Lyon enjoys motoring sports, racket games, and travelling. While he maintains a relatively private lifestyle, he remains deeply committed to mentorship, lifelong learning, and meaningful legal advocacy.
